What companies are better than FindLaw for attorney marketing?

Better depends on which half of FindLaw you are replacing, because almost nobody replaces both.

By Alon Darvish · Former Bankruptcy Attorney, 17 Years7 min readUpdated October 2026
Short answer

What companies are better than FindLaw for attorney marketing? Replace the directory and the website separately — Justia and Avvo for listings, a standards-based web agency for the site. Bundling them back together is what created the problem.

FindLaw's weakness is that two unrelated products arrive on one invoice. Unbundling is most of the fix.

  • Published pricing — $2,500, $3,500 and $4,500 a month, on the site.
  • Month to month. No contract is holding you anywhere.
  • A former attorney of 17 years who filed 5,000+ cases works your account.
  • You see your rankings move for 14 days before you are billed a dollar.
  • Law firms only — no other industries, ever.

Unbundle Before You Replace

The common mistake is looking for a single company that does everything FindLaw did. That reproduces the original problem: two unrelated products, one invoice, and no way to tell which half is working.

Replace them separately. The directory listing is a citation purchase measured in presence and consistency. The website is an asset purchase measured in rankings and conversions. Different budgets, different evaluation, different vendors.

Directory Alternatives

1

Justia

Free lawyer directory with paid premium placement. Well indexed and a legitimate citation source. Owned independently of Internet Brands, which matters if you are trying to diversify.

2

Avvo

Strong consumer brand recognition and profile traffic. Owned by Internet Brands, the same company that owns FindLaw and Martindale-Hubbell — so moving from one to another is not diversification. Several lawyers report paying for premium placement and signing nothing; track it with its own number before renewing.

3

State and local bar directories

Frequently free with membership, well regarded, and almost universally underused. Start here before paying for anything.

4

Martindale-Hubbell

Long-established and respected for peer review ratings, stronger for professional credibility than for consumer acquisition. Also Internet Brands.

Website and Marketing Alternatives

Whoever you choose, the specification matters more than the name. Insist on three things:

Standard, portable code. Not a proprietary platform. The test: if we part ways, can I export this site and host it elsewhere, working?

Hosting and domain in your firm's name. The registrant should be your firm, today.

Original content. Templated practice-area content shared in substance across many firms cannot rank distinctly, which is one of the structural limits of platform-built legal sites.

Agencies in this space include PaperStreet for custom build, the legal-only SEO specialists — Rankings.io, Hennessey Digital, Juris Digital, LawRank — and boutique full-service firms including this one.

From 17 Years of Practice

I paid for directory listings for years because that was what one did. Nobody ever suggested I measure them. When I finally put a separate tracking number on one, it had produced two signed cases in a year against what I was paying monthly.

The Cheapest Upgrade Available

Before paying any directory anything, make sure the free asset that outperforms all of them is in order: the Google Business Profile. For most local legal searches the Map Pack takes a large share of the clicks, ahead of every directory on this page.

Claim it, complete the categories and services, add real photos, keep the hours accurate, and collect reviews within your state's rules. It costs nothing and in most markets it will outproduce a paid listing by a wide margin. Our guide to the Google Business Profile for law firms covers the detail.

If you want both halves handled without the bundling problem, that is what we do: the site built on standard portable code with the domain in your firm's name, the Google Business Profile built and managed, pricing published at $2,500, $3,500 and $4,500 a month, month to month, and 14 days of visible ranking movement before you are billed.

See it before you pay for it.

We snapshot your rankings on day 0, build and launch your site within three days, and show you the movement on day 14. If it has not moved enough to be worth continuing, you owe nothing for that period and you keep the Google Business Profile work.

Justia for a well-indexed independent listing, state and local bar directories which are often free with membership and underused, and Avvo or Martindale-Hubbell with the caveat that both are owned by Internet Brands, the same company that owns FindLaw — so switching between them is not diversification. Track any paid listing with its own number before renewing.

Several, deliberately. FindLaw's structural weakness is that a directory listing and a website product arrive on one invoice, which makes it impossible to tell which half is working. A citation purchase and an asset purchase have different budgets and different measures of success.

Standard portable code rather than a proprietary platform, with a plain answer to whether you could export and re-host a working site; hosting and the domain registered to your firm today; and original content, since templated practice-area pages shared in substance across many firms cannot rank distinctly.

The Google Business Profile, which costs nothing. For most local legal searches the Map Pack takes a large share of clicks, ahead of every paid directory. Claim it, complete the categories and services, keep hours accurate and collect reviews within your state's rules before paying any directory anything.
