How do I choose a marketing company for a suburban law firm?

Suburban firms have better economics than city firms and one structural problem: your clients search from downtown while they are at work.

Short answer

How do I choose a marketing company for a suburban law firm? One that understands the commuter pattern — suburban markets are cheaper and less contested, but a large share of your prospects search from the city they work in, which breaks naive local targeting.

Your client lives four blocks away and searches from an office tower twenty miles downtown. Proximity ranks you for where they are, not where they live.

  • Published pricing — $2,500, $3,500 and $4,500 a month, on the site.
  • Month to month. No contract is holding you anywhere.
  • A former attorney of 17 years who filed 5,000+ cases works your account.
  • You see your rankings move for 14 days before you are billed a dollar.
  • Law firms only — no other industries, ever.

The Suburban Advantage Is Real

Suburban firms are frequently sold city strategies and told they are at a disadvantage. The economics say otherwise.

★ Four Genuine Advantages
  • Clicks cost materially less. Frequently a fraction of the adjacent downtown rate on the same terms, because fewer firms are bidding.
  • Local rankings are winnable. Five competitors rather than fifty, and incumbents with years of accumulated authority are concentrated in the city rather than your township.
  • Reviews are achievable as a moat. Forty good reviews makes you dominant in a suburb; downtown it makes you unremarkable.
  • Proximity works for you. The downtown firms do not rank in your area for the same geometric reason you do not rank in theirs.

For most practice areas a suburban firm's cost per signed case is better than a comparable downtown firm's, and an agency that frames your market as a limitation rather than an advantage has it backwards.

The Commuter Problem

The genuine complication, and almost no agency raises it.

A substantial share of suburban residents work in the city. They search during the working day, from a desk in a downtown office tower — and local results are driven by where the searcher is, not where they live. So your prospect, who lives four blocks from your office, gets shown the downtown firms.

Three consequences:

Your Map Pack advantage only operates when they search from home. Evenings, weekends, and from a phone at the house. Which is a real share of searches and not all of them.

Daytime searches go to the city. Unless organic or paid reaches them, which is the fix.

Reported metrics can mislead. An agency measuring Map Pack position from your office location sees a strong result and your prospect sees something else entirely. Checking this requires looking at results as a searcher downtown would see them.

Fixing the Commuter Problem

  1. Organic content does the daytime work. Classic organic results are not proximity-weighted the way local results are, so a page that answers the question well reaches the person at their desk downtown. This is the main reason a suburban firm should fund content rather than relying on the profile alone.
  2. Extend paid geography to the employment centre, not just your town — and measure it separately, because those clicks behave differently.
  3. Use the suburb's name as the hook, deliberately. Someone searching downtown for a lawyer in their home town types the town name. Those searches are cheap, high intent, and yours to win.
  4. Schedule ads for the full day, including working hours and evenings — the two patterns are different searchers.
  5. Say the convenient thing plainly. Evening and weekend appointments, parking, no downtown traffic, no garage fees. These are genuine advantages over a city firm and most suburban sites never mention them.

My office was on Wilshire, so I was the downtown firm in this comparison, and I benefited from exactly this effect without understanding it for years. People found me during the working day because they were nearby at the time. Their own neighbourhood attorney never appeared.

The Identity Question

Suburban firms face a positioning decision agencies rarely surface, and getting it wrong costs either credibility or the local advantage.

Position as the local firm. Emphasise the town, the community, the convenience, the fact that you are five minutes away and know the local court. Strongest for consumer practice areas where trust and accessibility decide — family law, estate planning, criminal defence, real estate, bankruptcy.

Position as the metro firm that happens to be located out here. Emphasise capability and the wider market, with the address as incidental. Appropriate for business, commercial and specialist practices where the client's concern is competence rather than proximity.

The mistake is doing both on the same site: a page claiming both deep local roots and metro-wide sophistication reads as neither. If you genuinely do both kinds of work, they need separate pages and separate campaigns, for the reasons on our multi-practice page.

And a note on naming: a firm named after the suburb is strongly positioned locally and awkwardly positioned for metro work. Worth knowing before a rebrand, not after.

What to Require of an Agency

  1. That it raises the commuter pattern without being asked.
  2. Rank checking from the employment centre, not just from your office.
  3. Content funded, not just the profile, because content is what reaches the daytime searcher.
  4. Suburb-name targeting treated as a cheap, high-intent opportunity rather than low volume.
  5. A clear positioning decision — local firm or metro firm — rather than both.
  6. Cost per signed case compared against metro benchmarks, so your advantage is visible rather than assumed.

Attorney Pro Marketing includes Google Business Profile work on every tier from $2,500, which is where a suburban firm's cheapest wins are, with the content programme roughly doubling at Growth ($3,500) — and content is what solves the commuter problem. Advertising is billed to your firm directly by Google, so extending geography to the employment centre and measuring it separately is something you can see rather than take on trust.

Published pricing, month to month with 30 days' notice, everything in your firm's name, and rankings recorded on day 0 against up to 30 keywords of your choosing with the movement reported on day 14 before you are billed for that period.

See it before you pay for it.

We snapshot your rankings on day 0, build and launch your site within three days, and show you the movement on day 14. If it has not moved enough to be worth continuing, you owe nothing for that period and you keep the Google Business Profile work.

One or the other, not both — a site claiming deep local roots and metro-wide sophistication reads as neither.
