Expungement Lawyer Marketing: Reaching People Ready for a Fresh Start

Record-clearing clients aren't in crisis, but they have a reason to act. Here's how to reach them, answer the eligibility question, and keep the economics of a flat-fee practice working.

Expungement lawyer marketing is different from the rest of criminal defense because nobody is in jail and nothing happens tonight. People search for record clearing when an old conviction costs them something: a job offer, an apartment, a professional license. Your marketing should meet that trigger, help people figure out whether they qualify, and price the service so it makes sense as a high-volume, lower-ticket practice.

★ Key Takeaways
  • Target the trigger: jobs, housing, licenses.
  • Use the words people search, then explain your state's real remedy.
  • Be honest about anything that now happens automatically.
  • Price leads against a lower flat fee.

What Triggers an Expungement Search?

Almost every record-clearing search starts with a rejection or a fear of one. A background check flagged a ten-year-old misdemeanor. A landlord asked about convictions. A nursing board application has a question the person dreads answering. Someone is applying to adopt, or coach their kid's team, or travel.

That gives you better targeting than "people with records." It tells you what to write about:

  • "old conviction showing up on background check"
  • "how to clear my record for a job"
  • "can a landlord see expunged records"
  • "do i have to disclose an expunged conviction on a job application"
  • "how long after probation can i expunge"

Each is a page, or at least a section. And because the trigger is often a specific job or license, the searcher is motivated. They're not in crisis, but they have a reason to act this month.

Match the Words People Actually Use

"Expungement" is the word most people search, but it isn't the legal term in every state. Depending on where you practice, the actual remedy might be sealing, setting aside, vacating, dismissing after probation, or a pardon. Searchers don't know the difference, and they shouldn't have to.

What people typeWhat they usually meanWhat your page should do
"expunge my record"Make it go away for background checksExplain your state's actual remedy and what it does and doesn't hide
"seal criminal record"Same goal, different wordUse both terms; define each as your state uses them
A statute number (for example, "1203.4" in California)They've already done researchTarget it directly; these searchers are close to hiring
"clean slate law [state]"Heard the law changedExplain what's automatic, what isn't, and where a lawyer still helps
"pardon lawyer"Often a serious or federal convictionSeparate page; different process and timeline

One caution. Several states have passed automatic record-clearing laws in recent years, and others are considering them. If your state has, your content has to explain honestly what happens automatically and what still requires a petition. Pretending people need a lawyer for something that happens on its own is a misleading communication under ABA Model Rule 7.1, and it's also bad business once they find out.

Lead With Eligibility, Not Persuasion

The expungement visitor's first question is "do I even qualify?" Answer it, or help them find out, and the call follows. A short eligibility screener works well here.

1

Ask four or five plain questions

What state and county, type of offense, whether probation or sentence is complete, how long ago, any open cases. Nothing more.

2

Don't auto-diagnose

The screener should route people to a call, not deliver a legal conclusion. Label it clearly as not legal advice and not a determination of eligibility.

3

Follow up the same day

Not as urgent as a jail call, but these leads cool off fast once the job opportunity passes.

4

Tell people who don't qualify why

If someone isn't eligible yet, say when they might be. They'll come back, and they'll tell people.

Screener answers come from prospective clients, so ABA Model Rule 1.18 applies to what you collect. Keep the questions minimal and the storage secure. Our landing pages can include this kind of short form.

Flat Fees and Volume Economics

Record clearing is usually a flat-fee service, and the fee is typically lower than a DUI or felony defense. That changes the marketing math. You can't spend on a record-clearing lead what you'd spend on a DUI lead.

Publish your fee or at least a starting price. People comparing you with court self-help forms, legal aid clinics and online document services need to see why paying a lawyer is worth it: you check eligibility properly, handle the filing, deal with the prosecutor's objection if there is one, and cover multiple convictions or counties. Say that plainly.

Then run the numbers before you buy anything. If your flat fee is modest, work out the most you can pay per lead and still profit at your actual retention rate. Our page on criminal defense marketing costs per retained case shows how.

From the Attorney's Side of the Desk

Bankruptcy and expungement share something: both are about a fresh start, and clients in both are often embarrassed about the past. In my practice, people responded to a lawyer who treated the old problem as ordinary paperwork rather than a moral failing. I think that tone matters even more for record clearing. Nobody wants to be lectured about a conviction they've already paid for.

Which Expungement Lawyer Marketing Channels Fit the Math?

For most firms, the best expungement lawyer marketing channels are organic search and the Map Pack, with paid search used carefully. The reason is economics: lower fees mean expensive clicks hurt more, and record-clearing searchers do enough research that good content reaches them.

  • SEO content is the core. Answer-first pages on eligibility, waiting periods and what employers can see in your state. Our criminal defense SEO guide covers structure.
  • Google Business Profile: add record clearing to your services and description. The local SEO guide for lawyers explains the ranking factors.
  • Paid search on statute-number and "lawyer" phrases only. Exclude "free," "form," "diy," "background check site" and "how to expunge myself" unless your fee competes with those.
  • Repeat clients: your past criminal clients may become eligible later. A simple reminder when someone's probation ends is useful service, and it's marketing too.

Reentry and Workforce Partners

Reentry organizations, workforce programs and second-chance employers meet exactly the people you serve. Volunteering at record-clearing clinics and giving talks at job-training programs builds real relationships, and it's good work regardless of the marketing.

Keep it clean. ABA Model Rule 7.2(b) limits giving anything of value for recommendations, and states vary on referral arrangements, so don't pay partners per client. For people whose old cases involved drugs, the drug crime lawyer marketing page touches on diversion and record impact.

Frequently Asked Questions

Mostly from people searching online after an old record caused a problem with a job, apartment or license. Answer-first content about eligibility and waiting periods in your state, a Google Business Profile that lists record clearing, and a short eligibility screener tend to work well. Past criminal clients who later become eligible are another strong source.

Sometimes, but it needs careful math. Record-clearing fees are usually lower than other criminal work, so expensive clicks hurt more. Focus on high-intent phrases like statute numbers and “expungement lawyer [city],” exclude do-it-yourself and free-form searches, and compare cost per retained client against your flat fee before scaling.

Generally yes. People comparing a lawyer with court self-help forms, legal aid and online document services want to see the price and what it includes. A flat fee or starting price, plus a plain explanation of what you do that a form service doesn't, helps qualified clients choose you and lets others self-select out.

Explain it honestly. Describe what happens automatically, who is excluded, how long it takes, and where a lawyer still adds value, such as convictions that aren't covered or the need to verify that records were actually cleared. Implying people need to pay for something that happens on its own would be misleading under ABA Model Rule 7.1 and similar state rules.
